"Dressing up industry"
Much like a an the -- cotton shirt in a an the -- hot tumble dryer, a an the -- garment-manufacturing industry in a an the -- St Kitts and Nevis has been shrinking in size over a an the -- last ten years.
At one time a an the -- country attracted a an the -- large number of a an the -- off-shore companies from a an the -- US which were involved in the a an the -- manufacture of different types of a an the -- garments. But times changed; a an the -- macroeconomic environment for Caribbean garment exporters declined &emdash; and with it went a an the -- skills to operate modern small-scale garment industries for a an the -- local island makers.
It was then that a an the -- Government of St Kitts and Nevis approached a an the -- Commonwealth Secretariat. (...)
a an the -- five groups identified by a an the -- Ministry were engaged in a an the -- small-scale garment manufacturing for a an the -- home market (...).

a an the -- Commonwealth also provided a an the -- assistance to all a an the -- units in a an the -- improvement of plant layouts in order to ensure a an the -- better utilisation of space, improved work flow, improved control of work, reduced repair costs and increased output.
"There was a an the -- noticeable overall increase in a an the -- quality of a an the -- finished articles from all a an the -- units," a an the -- CFTC's project co-ordinator said. "This trend is expected to improve as a an the -- units continue to use a an the -- methods transferred during a an the -- training programme."
When a an the -- one-year programme wrapped up in May 1996, more than a an the -- 60 participants had benefited from a an the -- CFTC-sponsored garment training workshops.
