GEOGRAPHY

1. Lake Chad touches the extreme northern border of Cameroon.
2. Hot and dry in the south, November to February.
3. Bamboo forest in the north-west.
4. Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam.

SOCIETY

1. In the north, the people are mostly Hausa, Fulbe, Sudanese and Choa Arab

2. 40% Christian (about half Roman Catholic); 20% Moslem; 40% traditional beliefs.

3. French and English are both official.

4. The literacy rate was 54% in 1990...

5. At the most recent official estimate, Cameroon had 28,000 hospital beds.

6. In 1992 the workforce was about 4.6m

COMMUNICATIONS

1. Cameroon Tribune (daily in French and English edition) is the official newspaper.

2. Surface mail may take 5-8 weeks.

3. Telex/telegram facilities at post offices in Yaoundé and Douala, and in big hotels.

TRANSPORT

1. There are coach services between Yaoundé and Ngaoundere.

2.Trains, though not expensive, are slow.

3.Camship is the national shipping line.

4. Most provincial capitals have small airports.

PHYSICAL ECONOMY

1. The chief export crops are coffee, cocoa, cotton, tea, rubber, palm oil, bananas and pineapples.

2. Sheep, cattle and pigs are also raised.

3. Aqua culture is in its early stages.

4. Cameroon has 20 big sawmills and 5 plywood factories.

5. Aluminium is an important export and domestic product.

6. Cameroon has deposits of bauxite, uranium, nepheline, syenite, industrial clay, nickel, cobalt, gold, iron ore, tin and limestone.

7. The country's attractions are the game parks and nature reserves in the north.

8. There is oil in the Rio de Rey basin, producing 6.3m tons in 1993.
