If you are shortlisted, the company will send you a letter offering you an interview. The first thing to do is to write back and thank the company. You should also confirm the date, the time and the place of the interview.
The second thing is to get ready for the interview: try and find as much information as possible about the firm by obtaining brochures, company literature, annual reports, catalogues etc... Your aim is to show them that you have a certain knowledge about their commercial activities.
Sometimes you may be asked to take a few tests such as Psychological, Trade and
Intelligence Tests. It is also true that more and more companies use Personality Tests and Graphology to analyse the candidates' character and abilities required for a specific job.
a) One-to-one interview: The candidate is alone with the interviewer.
b) Group interview: Several candidates are asked to discuss a subject. This can be used to shortlist candidates before the main interview.
c) Panel interview: This is mainly in the Civil Service, universities and some companies.
THE DO'S: Dress suitably and smartly (conservatively); show real interest in the job you are being offered; be enthusiastic; be confident; if possible try to be interviewed first or last; be there ON TIME ; use plain language ; always tell the truth; give simple answers...
AND ...... THE DON'TS: Do not be late; do not use dialect, slang or jargon; do not be too personal; you should not interrupt the interviewer; do not criticise your former or present employer; do not argue with the interviewer; do not try to be over-confident; do not sit down until you have been told to ;
REMEMBER TO SEND A THANK-YOU LETTER AFTER THE INTERVIEW! This will show the company your interest in the vacancy. You should also send another letter if you get the job to confirm all the important points raised during the interview.
